In its concept of application of
physical sciences to Biology and Medicine it is strongly linked to that of
BioMedical Engineering. Since the teaching and research in Amsterdam is strongly
embedded in the faculty of Sciences and the teaching institute of Physics,
Mathematics and Informatics, the teaching and research programs have a stronger
accent on these disciplines than BioMedical Engineering but there is a
considerable amount of overlap. In fact, the department of Medical Physics at
the Academic Medical Center of the University of Amsterdam has for 6 years
carried the secretariat of the International Federation of Biomedical
Engineering, the IFMBE. Interestingly enough,
the IFMBE forms together with the Institute of Medical Physics, the IOMP,
the International Union of Physical and Engineering Sciences in medicine, the IUPESM,
which is since the year 2000 a full member of ICSU. |
